“My dad never likes the way that I grill meat,” Drew complained as he began a marinade. “Every year, he seems to think I’m not doing something the right way.”
“He didn’t say anything last year, dear,” Nancy argued.
“He didn’t have to. There was that look.”
“Fruit salad’s done,” Megan announced, transferring a bowl to the fridge. She was wearing her overalls. She only owned one pair and Ted had always hated them. It was one of the few things he teased her about, and some of his remarks could be quite irritating.
“Well hello there, Billie May Jean,” he said once.
“Great,” he remarked bitterly on another occasion. “Now if you get your hair cut short, people will think I bat from the other side.”
Megan smiled in relief. She wouldn’t have to deal with those comments from him ever again.
“Going to help me grill, Steve?” Drew asked.
“Can I start the fire?”
“We’ll see.”
“That means no, right?” he asked snottily.
“Stephen,” Nancy cautioned. He then remembered Megan’s words of warning and promptly shut his mouth. He was as committed to keeping himself out of diapers as his sisters were committed to keeping themselves in them.
Glen and Ida arrived slightly earlier than anticipated. Among the first things they noticed was that Carrie was diapered, and not the least bit shy about it either.
“Both of them now?” Glen remarked.
“Well…look how well behaved they are,” said Ida.
“Ida, that isn’t the point…”
